Lavaca County Texas – Introduction

The original county seat of Lavaca County from 1846 to 1852 was Petersburg, however, Petersburg is now a ghost town.  The City of Hallettsville is the County Seat of Lavaca County.  The county was established in 1846 and is named for the Lavaca River.

Pictures of the Lavaca County Courthouse of 1897 (Current)

The Lavaca County Courthouse currently in use was built in 1897, but, this is not the first place where courts were held in the county.  In Petersburg Texas, the first county seat, court was first held in a log house.  Second in the Dowling home, then finally, in a purpose built courthouse structure in 1851.  Lavaca County seat moved to Hallettsville in 1852 and one structure used as a courthouse predates the 1897 permanent structure we still see, today.  The 1897 Courthouse underwent restoration in 2010.

Here are our pictures of a wonderfully restored work of art.
